Eva was the daughter of D. P. Calkins. In the year of 1862, D. P. Calkins along with his wife, two sons, Amos and Judson, daughters Olive and Eva came to Minnesota. During the early Winter months of 1863, little Eva fell victim of that dreaded disease, diphtheria, which was epidemic at that time. Eva's death was the first death to be recorded in the township of East Chain in Martin County. Her family stayed on in East Chain Township and homesteaded the property in 1864. Her grave is located on the family farm that is owned by decendent's of D.P Calkins to this present day.
