His father, Thomas Jefferson Skipper died in the Civil War. After the war, Henry J and his oldest brother, George W Skipper moved to Texas - settling down to farm in Johnson Co, Texas. Henry married his first wife, Mary Oliver in Aug 1878. They had three children - two boys (Arthur A and Henry E Skipper) and a daughter who did not survive childhood. Shortly after his son Henry was born Mary died. He remarried a year later in 1886 to Cynthia Cornelius. They remained in the Johnson County area for several years before finally moving down to Kingsville, Kleberg Co, Tx. He was first a farmer, then a minister for the Primitive Baptist Church - before finally working for the Kingsville Cotton Oil Mill where he eventually became a cottonbuyer. He lost his right arm in a mill accident. He was a member of the AF & AM; also of the Davy Crockett Clan #10 according to his obituary. He and his second wife had seven more children - Beulah, William, Florence, Alice, Ethel, Dessie and Tiney.
