James Hoyt Knapp, B.A. 1896 at Yale, was the son of James Henry Knapp, manufacturer of hats in Danbury and South Norwalk. Grandson of James & Martha (Bailey) Knapp of New York City and South Norwalk. His mother, Mariette (Hoyt) Knapp, was the daughter of Starr & Sally Mana (Nichols) Hoyt of Bethel, Conn. His brother, Howard H. Knapp, was also a Yale grad. of 1882.
James worked in a woolen mill, Lawrence, Mass, 1896-January, 1897, associated with woolen commission house of Kunhardt & Stockton (later The George E. Kunhardt Corp.), New York and Boston, 1897-1932 (member of firm 1903-32 and vice-president 1918-32); salesman General Baking Co. 1933 and P. Stevens & Co., Inc , New York City, 1933-39.
He was director Textile Manufacturers Alliance, Inc ; chairman Stamford Committee, Yale Alumni Association of Fairfield County, 1921-22 and council member of association 1929-30; founder and charter member Woodway Country Club, Stamford. James was a member of the Madison Ave Church (Presbyterian), New York City.
Married November 24, 1900, in South Norwalk, Ethel Ferris (Wheaton College ex-93), daughter of Frank Arthur and Mary Ann (Cape) Ferris. She was born in New York but raised in Norwalk. Her grandparents: John J. & Mahaly J. Cape. Their children:
1. son (died June 26, 1902),
2. Mariette Hoyt, the wife of Bayes M Norton,
3. Martha Kunhardt (Smith College), the wife of Alfred Busselle, Jr. (B A Haverford College 1926)
Death due to a heart attack. Buried in Norwalk, Conn.
Survived by wife (she died Jan. 3, 1952 in Stamford, CT), daughters, three grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. George E Kunhardt of Boston, and a brother, Philip N. Knapp of Norwalk.
