He was 92 years old. Robert was born in Guilford County May 23, 1926, and was the oldest of thirteen children. He graduated from McLeansville High School – Class of 1943. Robert was a WWII veteran having served in the Army and Air Force. Robert worked for a short time at Liberty Hosiery Mill in Gibsonville, FCX Farm Supply in Greensboro and went to work for Thompson Arthur Paving Company in 1958 and retired after 33 years with the company. Robert always believed in hard work and loved to hunt, fish, and garden. He loved to see things grow, and he loved even more being able to supply his family and friends with his fresh vegetables during summertime.
Robert was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church and was active in the life of the church as long as his health allowed. He served as a Deacon, an Elder, Sunday School Superintendent, taught Sunday School for many years and served on various committees doing the work of the church.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Robert, Sr. and Lillie Alcon; brothers, Ralph, Henry and J.C. Alcon; and sisters, Joyce Wyre (and husband, Charles), and Lois Phillippe (and husband, Frank).
Robert is survived by his wife of 70 years, Frances Holt Alcon; sons, Glenn (Pat), and Jerry (Shirley); daughters, Beth Alcon Andrews (Tony), and Sharon Alcon Smith (Tim); 7 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and another great-grandson due in October; and 1 great-great grandchildren and a great-great granddaughter due in November.
Robert is also survived by brothers, David Alcon (Sonja), Bobby Alcon (Carolyn), W. A. Alcon (Hazel), Ray Alcon (Diane), Billy Alcon (Sue); sisters, Eula Mae Carter (Kelly) and Faye Downes (Jim); sisters-in-law, Betty Alcon, Billie Ann Alcon, Gerry Alcon; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 23, at Bethel Presbyterian Church, 300 Knox Road, McLeansville, NC 27301, with burial following in the church cemetery.
