After their marriage on August 12, 1940, Paul started his teaching career and the family began its journey in Pierceville, KS, moving to Monument, Colorado for a brief time. Both Betty and Paul loved their Colorado days, but were pleased to relocate to Quenemo, KS in 1957 and resided there until moving to Ottawa, KS in 1986. They shared 51 years of love and life until Paul’s death in February of 1991. Following his death, Betty moved to Lawrence, Kansas where she enjoyed an active social life. Betty and Paul invested in The Dairy Bar in Quenemo KS in the 60’s. She then began working at KOFO radio station, Ottawa KS in the 70’s. She thoroughly enjoyed the job, leaving only when an opportunity for advancement appeared. This was an opportunity to work for the Water Resources Section of the US Geological Survey, Lawrence, KS. She was administrative staff from 1977 to 1983 and only left the job following Paul’s retirement. She, along with other office staff, created the KOFO Gals Cookbook, treasured because of the many family recipes included in the cookbook. She loved her job with Water Resources, challenged by the detailed travel and payment work required for the job.

Betty was a member of the First Christian Church of Ottawa and participated in the church for many years. Betty loved reading from the day she learned to read and continued reading throughout her life. In the 80’s she and some of her sisters would meet in Las Vegas, Nevada playing the slot machines and enjoying their time together. Her most favorite and memorable thing to do was going to Nebraska several times a year to visit her family.

Betty was loved by many and will be missed. We celebrate her life and accomplishments and will cherish the wonderful memories she created for her family and friends.

A graveside service for Mary E. “Betty” Sims, 97, who died on September 22, 2018, will be held at Highland Cemetery with Adam Lynch and Craig Robertson officiating.
