Known as the Merchant Prince of Salem, he made his initial fortune as a shipowner involved in the trans-Atlantic trade, but by 1840, anticipating Salem's decline as a port, began to buy large tracts of forests in Maine and the White Mountains of New Hampshire. A tract of land in New Hampshire, Sargent's Purchase, included Mount Washington, the highest peak in the northeast United States. He provided the financing for the carriage road to the summit. He increased his family's fortune in the lumber trade. He was president of the Naumkeag Steam Cotton Company and served one year as mayor of Salem in 1851.

Published in the Piscataquis (ME) Observer 9 Apr 1863 p3: "DIED---In Salem, Mass., March 31st, David Pingree, Esq., President of the Naumkeag Bank, Naumkeag Mills and Essex Rail Road. He was largely engaged in the lumber business in Maine."
