Donald J. Duchon

Manitowoc - Donald J. Duchon, a Manitowoc resident, passed away at home on Monday evening, September 24, 2018.

Don was born on July 18, 1930 in Manitowoc, son of the late Anton & Alvina (Kostlevy) Duchon. He was a graduate of Manitowoc Lincoln High School, Class of 1948. Don was a Veteran serving as a musician with the 5th Army Band from 1951 until his honorable discharge in 1954. His work career spanned over 40 years as a Service Supervisor at Patten Industries, a Caterpillar Tractor Dealer, in Elmhurst, Illinois. However, his passion was always music. Don started playing the clarinet and sax as a young boy. Starting in high school, he played with the Duke Janda Orchestra and other dance bands in Manitowoc and surrounding areas. After his marriage to Eileen Joyce in 1955 in Chicago, Don played with the West Suburban Community Band for 39 years. Don and Eileen raised their five children in Downers Grove, Illinois. Eileen passed away in 1980 after 25 years of marriage. After retiring from Caterpillar in 1995, Don moved back to Manitowoc and married his high school classmate Mildred (Fessler) Kelley in April 1996. A lifelong boater, Don spent many years with the Chicago Area Auxiliary Coast Guard, advancing to the rank of Flotilla Captain. While retired in Manitowoc, he purchased his dream boat "Home Again". Don had a giving spirit and participated in many volunteer roles, including the Golden K Kiwanis Club, the American Legion, Meals on Wheels, K-Kids Mentoring Program and as a driver for the Red Cross and Aurora Medical Center. He continued to immerse himself in the music world by playing in several bands, including the Kingsmen Orchestra, the Carl Laack Band, the Manitowoc Marine Band and the Mystic Moods Orchestra. Most recently, Don had been leading the Don Duchon and the Mystic Moods Orchestra at the Manitowoc Senior Center on Wednesdays. Don and Mildred enjoyed a wonderful retirement life in Manitowoc for 22 years.

Don is survived by his wife: Mildred; his daughters and sons-in-law: Kathy Templeman (Dave), Margaret Hoshell (Joe); and his three sons and daughters-in-law: Darrell Duchon (Rosanna), Dan Duchon (Ann), and John Duchon (Gail); a step daughter and step son-in-law: Mary Grewell (Kyle); step sons and step daughter-in-law: Pat Kelley (Mary), John Kelley (Kelley Rogers); and eight grandchildren.
