Mrs. Young died Sunday, April 29, 2007, in the Prairie Lakes Care Center, Watertown.
She was born Aug.29, 1914, at De Smet, to Carl August and Mabel Mary (Baker) Krueger. She attended school through the 8th grade in De Smet and then moved with her family to Lake Preston, where she attended high school. In 1931 her family moved to a farm north of Garden City.
She was married June 4, 1934, to Glenn Ronald Young at Webster. The couple lived in the Garden City area where she worked for area cafes. She and Treva Headley also owned and operated the Home Café in Garden City. Hazel worked at the M & M Truck Stop Café in Clark and at the Clark Care Center. Her husband died in 1964.
In 1965 she moved to Redfield and began employment as a practical nurse at the South Dakota Developmental Center, a place where she enjoyed working, retiring in 1976. Following her retirement she returned to live in Garden City. She joined the Garden City Development Corporation and worked to build the Garden City Manor., After it's completion she moved into the manor and served as it's manager for approximately 15 years. She continued to make the manor her home until a short time ago, when she moved into an assisted living center near Watertown, and then to the care center.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church at Garden City for many years, the Garden City Development Corporation, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Garden City Centennial Committee. She enjoyed life; some of her fondest moments were spent fishing with Treva, especially at Poinsett, dancing, sharing Thursday potluck meals and playing bingo. Her love of sports was second to none; she listened to many games on the radio. She enjoyed collecting Elvis memorabilia, absolutely loved the color red, and was a very special mother, mother-in-law and grandmother.
Survivors include her children: Lois Jean (Young) Lian, Garden City, and Richard (Cleo) Young, Watertown; eight grandchildren 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law: Joyce Krueger, Sioux Falls, and Wilma Krueger, Redfield.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son-in-law: Kenneth Lian, brothers: Bill, James and Elden (Alta) Krueger, and a sister: Helen.
