Robert Russell was son of Leslie Wead Russell, a lawyer in Canton and a judge on the New York
Supreme Court 1891-1903, son of John Leslie Russell (B A University of Vermont 1826) & Mary (Clark) Russell of Canton. Robert's mother, Harriet Jane (Lawrence) Russell, was daughter of Robert Fowler and Mary Lucy (Clark) Lawrence.
Robert received his B.A. 1900 Yale. He studied law in Canton 1900-01; attended New York Law School 1901-02, admitted to bar June, 1902. He associated with his father and brother-in-law in firm of Russell & Hartridge, New York City, 1902-03, partner Russell & Fans [Martin B , '97] 1903-05; confidential clerk to Judge Charles B McLaughlin 1905-07 and to Judge James W. Houghton 1908-09.
He lived in England 1909-11 engaged in writing fiction for American magazines, in newspaper work 1911-25 (on staff of Chicago American, Emporia [KS] Gazette, Staunton [Va] Daily News, Baltimore News-Post 1918-19, and Washington Star 1919-20, assistant editor New Britain Herald 1920-25). He was a life insurance agent from 1925 until retirement in 1931 because of ill-health.
Robert attended Officers' Training School, Camp Lee, Sept.-Nov.1918. He was a member Grace Church (Episcopal), Canton. He married April 22, 1919, in St Louis, to Bernice Tunney, daughter of Owen & Katharine Tunney. They had a daughter, Katharine. Mrs. Russell died in April, 1928.
Buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Canton.
Survived by daughter and a sister, Harriette, the wife of Sir Nigel Leslie Campbell of Amersham, Bucks, England.
