In 1833, he married Elizabeth Skaggs (1817-1856) and had 3 children: Mary (b. 1834), Osborn (b. 1836) and Francis M. (b.1838). After her death, he married Hester Caroline (Gibbs) Knowles, a young widow with 4 children. Henry and Hester had 3 children before his death: Mary Elizabeth (1859-1937, Henry M. (1861- ) and Andrew Johnson Smith (1863-1929).
