British Army General. He joined the Army as a cornet in 1836, and was promoted lieutenant in 1839, captain in 1841, major in 1848, brevet lieutenant-colonel in 1854, colonel in 1860, major-general in 1868, lieutenant general in 1877 and full general in 1881. He served in the Crimean War and took part in the Charge of the Heavy Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava as well as the Battles of Sebastopol, Inkerman and Chernaya. He commanded the 8th Hussars from 1880 to 1886 and the 11th Hussars from 1886 until his death. He was awarded the Order of the Bath in 1875.
