He enlisted as a volunteer with his father, Harrison, at Alton, Illinois on 21 June 1847.
He served as a Private in Colonel Bissell's Company B 2 IL Foot as a musician and later in Co B 6th IL Foot.
Andrew died of disease contracted while serving in Puebla and was buried in a mass grave outside of Puebla, Mexico.
In 1851, the US Government purchased land for a cemetery in Mexico City and the remains of those buried in Puebla were transferred and reinterred in a common grave in the Mexico City National Cemetery along with about 750 other unidentified soldiers who perished while serving their county.
