Arthur Bates. 77. a retired minister and dairy farmer, of D'Lo died of heart failure at Simpson General Hospital on December 9, 2002.
Graveside services were held December 11 at the Cliburn Cemetery in Lawrence County. Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Mendenhall was in charge of those services.
Mr. Bates was born in Warren County on December 13, 1925. He was a minister for over 35 years. "He was a kind and loving husband,"said his wife of 12 years, Martha Dixon Bates. "He loved everybody and witnessed to people every day of his life until he got sick." Mr. Bates was a member of Jesus Name Church in D'Lo.
In addition to his wife, survivors include sons, Larry Bates of Gulfshores, Ala., Paul Bates of Monticello, Mathew Bates of Clarksdale, Philip Bates of Waynesboro, Ringo Runnels, Jonny A. Runnels and James A. Runnels, all of Magee; daughters, Lilleon Fly of Laurel, Sara Waller of Waynesboro, Dorothy Seay, Brenda Koontz and Peggy Brown, all of Ellisville; brothers, Thurman Bates of Ellisville and Cecil Bates of Star City, Ark.; sister, Hazel Bates of Ellisville; 24 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Middie Bates.
