Harry Thomas “Pete” Akers, Jr, 97, of Bluefield, VA, passed away on Friday, September 28, 2018 at Heritage Hall, Tazewell, VA. He was born in Matewan, WV to the late Harry Thomas Akers, Sr and Maude Ellen Brawley Akers. Harry retired from Bluefield Supply Company. He had a backyard shop where he spent most of his time repairing or building anything that was brought to him. He loved telling stories about Pocahontas and Boissevain, where he spent his early years growing up. Harry was a WWII Veteran of the United States Navy, the Seabees. He was a long time member of the VFW Post #9696. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife:

Juanita Fain Akers; brothers: Jack and Charles; sisters: Ellen Marie Roman, Ann Fife, June Tozer; son in law: Jimmy Thompson.

He is survived by his sons: Larry Akers of Bluefield, WV, Gary Akers (Kim) of Conway, SC; daughters: Linda Thompson of Bluefield, VA, Melissa Belcher of Smyrna, GA, Carlene Vogel (Richard) of Tazewell, VA; sister: Phyllis Gianforcaro of Columbus, OH; grandchildren: Hilaree Wilkinson (Todd) of Mooresville, NC, Stacey Mulkey (Scott) of Roanoke, VA, Kelly Janutolo of Cedar Bluff, VA, Neil Akers of Conway, SC, Richard Vogel (Rachel) of Pulaski, VA, Chris Vogel (Jill) of Tazewell, VA; 15 great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank the staff of Heritage Hall, Tazewell for the compassion and care given to Harry during his time with them. A special thank you to Laura and Pam who “spoiled him and took such good care of him.

A service to celebrate “Pete’s” life will be held Monday, October 1, 2018 at 2:00 P.M. at Dudley Memorial Chapel with Rev Steve Aker officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens. Military grave rites will be conducted by the VFW Post #9696 and the Pocahontas American Legion Post #14.
