A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Pottsville, Schuylkill County, March 31, 1864, as a private with Co. F, 48th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 17, 1865.
Ordained as a minister in 1869, throughout his life he served at a variety of pulpits across south-central Pennsylvania counties. He married married Lucinda lnu. and fathered William (b. @1872), John W. (b. 12/23/73), and Mary (b. @1879). Lucinda's status is unknown, but he married Mary Ann Hartman March 3, 1887, in York, but she died December 26, 1901. He then married Lavina C. Zimmerman October 22, 1902, in Harrisburg. He died at his son John's home from "lobar pneumonia" with 'myocarditis" a contributing factor. His obituary in the Harrisburg Telegraph erroneously headlines his burial in Penbrook Cemetery but gets it right in the body of the obituary.
