"Joint funeral rites for Cloquet couple.
Mr. and Mrs. James Alstad laid to rest in Hillcrest Cemetery Tuesday, April 5.
An unusual tragedy occurred in Cloquet Saturday evening when James Alstad, well known pioneer resident, passed beyond just three days after the death of his wife, who died on Wednesday night at the home of her son, Fred Huerlin, at Spokane, Wash. The shock upon hearing of his wife's death and his failing health were pronounced as the cause of Mr. Alstad's death.
Mr. Alstad had been a resident of Cloquet for forty years. He came here from Alstad, Wis., which was named in his honor, and he managed a store for a number of years. For many years he was engaged in the grocery and meat market business in Cloquet, and became one of the most well known pioneer residents of this city. He was a member of the Scandinavion Fraternity of America, and of the Woodmen of the World. He was 76 years of age, at the time of his death, being born in Norway in 1851.
Mrs. Alstad, who was 68 years of age, died suddenly from heart trouble, at Spokane, Wash., on Wednesday, March 30. She left here the latter part of December to visit with her son, and seek different climate for her health, as she had been ailing for several years. Mrs. Alstad had a host of friends in Cloquet, as she was a most congenial character and well liked by all who knew her. She was an active member of the Zion Swedish Lutheran church and of the ladies aid in that church.
The body of Mrs. Alstad arrived here Monday evening, accompanied by her son, Fred on Tuesday, April 5, double funeral rites were held at the Alstad home at 89 Eighth street, and at the Zion church. Rev. T.T. Roan, of Our Savior's Norwegian Lutheran of this city, and Rev. Carl O. Swan, of the Swedish Lutheran church of Duluth, officiated. A vocal duet was rendered by Robert Robbested and iss Louise Swenson. The two bodies were interned in Hillcrest cemetery. Pallbearers chosen were: For Mr. Alstad, Alfred Bengtson, Pete Johnson, Joe Weselik, Edwin Erickson, Andrew Larson, John Anderson, Olaf Hortberg, John Nelson and Olaus Johnson.
Surviving the deceaseds are two sons, Fred Huerlin, of Spokane, and Clarence Alstad, of Cloquet; and two daughters, Mrs. N.J. Thorpe and Miss Hazel Alsted, also of Cloquet. Mrs. Thomas Hanson, of Walnut, Ill."
