In Memory of
Scotty Jodine Paetzel
August 6, 1937 - September 25, 2018

Scotty Jodine Owen Paetzel passed away on Tuesday, September 25, 2018. She was born on August 6, 1937, in Rosston, Arkansas. Her family moved to Fort Worth, Texas, when she was still a baby. She spent her childhood active in Girl Scouts and winning State Fair blue ribbons. Her teenage years were devoted to striking out softball batters and breaking hearts.

She found her passion for teaching at The University of Texas at Austin (Hook 'em!) as a student teacher, where she earned her degree in Early Childhood Development. Scotty was Secretary of the National Honor Society for Home Economics students at UT and later went on to earn her master's and doctorate in Early Childhood Development.

After college, Scotty embarked on a teaching career in Houston, where she led classes at Kincaid, Meriwether and Applewood schools. Scotty eventually became Director of Applewood for over 20 years. During that time, she was also Director of children's activities at the YWCA. In addition, Scotty volunteered at Spring Branch Medical Center.

At a period in her life when most people talk of retirement, Scotty pushed forward. To her, the glass ceiling was merely a retractile sunroof, and she climbed right through it. She became an entrepreneur in her 50s and started her own business, taking on contracts with preschools such as St. Philip, St. Martin's and Concord. While Director at Concord, located in the IRS Federal building, she showed great leadership during the Oklahoma City bombing and 9/11 tragedies and implemented safety measures for children and teachers in the aftermath of both.

For over 50 years as a devoted educator, Scotty impacted the lives of thousands of students across Texas and beyond, leaving the largest impact on her own children.

She loved celebrating holidays with her children and grandchildren, so much so that she insisted on leaving the hospital right after the birth of her fourth child, Karl, so they could be home for Christmas. And when her daughter Kris Nicole moved to California, Scotty told her, "Whenever we're together, it's Christmas!" which is how she lived and celebrated life.

Scotty is preceded by her parents Scott and Eunice Owen as well as lifelong husband Edward Gustav Paetzel. She is survived by loving sisters Jane Hewitt, Jeannette West, and Sue Shook; four children, Kim, Kris Nicole and husband Gabriel, Kevin and wife Angela, Karl and wife Kristin; grandchildren, Audrey, Hailey, Maximilian, Parker Rose and Savannah; and Kim's Labrador Radar.

It was Scotty's wish that (along with making a donation to your favorite cause) you do something fun for yourself. Drop a Benjamin in a slot machine, attend a raucous college football game or visit the annual Christmas Market in Nuremberg, Germany. You are officially invited by Scotty to go live it up!
