St. Petersburg, Florida -- John A. Valera, 53, of 8150 Gulfport Blvd, South, and 875 John Fitch Highway, Fitchburg, Mass. died Saturday in the St. Petersburg Hospital.

He was born in Fitchburg, Sept. 14, 1992, a son of Mrs. Antonina (DiNatale) Valera and the late Joseph Valera, and was a retired U.S. Internal Revenue agent, a certified public accountant, and a notary public.

He was a member of St. Anthony's Parish in Fitchburg and sang in the church choir, and was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church in St. Petersburg. A Navy veteran of World War II, he was assigned to the U.S.S. Nevada during the attack on Pearl Harbor.

He is survived by his widow; Mrs. Ada (Scaficchia) Valera; his mother of Fitchburg; two songs, John V. Valera of Fitchburg and Peter L. Valera of Leominster, Mass.; two daughters, Palma, wife of John Aubin of Lunenburg, Mass., and Mary Ann, wife of Arthur Hartland of Fitchburg; two brothers, Philip Valera of Hudson, Mass., and Charles Valera of Fitchburg; four sisters, Mrs. Isabel DiRusso of Leominster, Mrs. Josephine Mammone of Fitchburg, Mrs. Concetta Piccolomini of Leominster and Miss Isabel Valera of Fitchburg; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews;

The funeral will be held Thursday from the Lavery-Chartrand Funeral Home, 99 Summer St., Fitchburg, with a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Anthony's church. Interment will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery. Calling hours in the funeral home are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
