US Senator. His mother married Millard Tydings, who also served in the US Senate, and he was raised in Aberdeen, Maryland. He served in the U.S. Army during the post-World War II occupation of Germany as a Corporal as a member of the 6th Constabulary Regiment. He graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park (1951) and the University of Maryland Law School (1953). Tydings attained admission to the bar in 1952 and began to practice. In 1954 he was a successful Democratic candidate for the Maryland House of Delegates, and served from 1955 to 1961. From 1961 to 1963 he served as Maryland's US Attorney. In 1964 Tydings was a successful US Senate candidate, defeating incumbent Republican James Glenn Beall. He served one term, 1965 to 1971, and was defeated for reelection in 1970 by Beall's son John Glenn Beall. From 1969 to 1971 Tydings was Chairman of the Senate's District of Columbia Committee. After leaving the Senate, Tydings practiced law and was an unsuccessful 1976 candidate for the Democratic US Senate nomination. He was a member of the University of Maryland Board of Regents from 1974 to 1984, and was Chairman from 1982 to 1984.
