Merton Haywood Atherton, 53, native and life-long resident of Wilmington, died Saturday at his home. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon in the Baptist Church. The Rev. Reginald Martin officiated. Burial was in Riverview Cemetery. Bearers were Harold Howe, Jasper Howe, Karl Jacobs and Ivan Bartlett, all of Wilmington, and Morton Howe of Bennington and Emmanuel Trevarrow of East Dover, Mr. Atherton was born in Wilmington, Sept. 7, 1910. He was a son of Forrest and Florence (Quinn) Atherton. His marriage to the former Agnes Howe took place in 1940 in West Brattleboro. Besides his wife he is survived by seven children, Stuart, Beverly of Brattleboro, Kendrick, Kimball, Arlene, Kelvin and Kent. He also leaves four sisters, Mrs. Karl Jacobs, Mrs. Ivan Bartlett, Mrs. Francis Howe of Wilmington and Mrs. Emmanuel Trevarrow of East Dover.
