He met his future wife, Nannie May Wood, when he became a boarder in her parents' home. They married September 10, 1910. They were the parents of Vance Wood, Mary Evelyn, Susie May, Betty Lou, U. A. Bryan, and another child that lived only a few hours.
Uhlan was a carpenter by trade, and he and his family lived in a number of different locations in Texas as he worked on various construction sites. In later life he was a clerk at the Dilley, Texas Post Office.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He loved to tell tall tales to his grandchildren, keeping them entertained for hours at a time.
