US Congressman. From 1854 to 1856, he was the prosecuting attorney of Linn County, Iowa and member of the State Senate, 1856 to 1860. During the Civil War he served as a Major in the 20th Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Infantry. Afterwards he was appointed chief justice of the Territory of Idaho and served until his resignation in 1879. That same year he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-sixth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Rush Clark. He was reelected to the Forty-seventh Congress and served until 1883. Declining to be a candidate for renomination, he was a member of the State house of representatives, 1885 to 1887 and judge of the eighteenth judicial district of Iowa, 1894 to 1906. His brother was Congressman John McCandless Thompson of Iowa.
