BONEVA BRAATEN

Dr. Boneva "Bonnie" Olea Braaten, 66, Bismarck, passed to eternal life on Oct. 21, 2011, at St. Gabriel's Community. Private memorial services were held, and Bonnie chose to have her body donated to the University of North Dakota Medical School.

Bonnie was born May 4, 1945, in Bismarck, the daughter of Mel and Eva (Sheffield) Braaten. She was raised and attended schools in Bismarck and graduated from Bismarck High School in 1963. Bonnie graduated from the University of North Dakota; thereafter, she earned a master's degree from Kent State University and Ph.D. from the University of the Pacific in California. Her passion was caring for the mentally ill and abused children during her long career in crisis social work in Riverside, Calif., where she was a disaster coordinator and supervising social worker for Riverside County.

Bonnie was enjoying retirement in Bismarck with her many friends and caregivers from near and as far away as California and Mexico. Although she was retired, Bonnie continued to stay busy assisting the elderly in a caregiving role. Her life was also filled with volunteer work at the Red Cross and the love of her many dear friends. Her heart was always open with a smile and a welcome.

Bonnie is survived by her sister, Yvonne (Dr. Bruce III) Holman and her niece, Jenna Kroner, both of Milwaukee; her nephew, Bruce Holman IV, Minneapolis; and her special friends, the "B" girls.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Special thanks to her doctors, Dr. Brad Buell, Dr. "Jay", Dr. Biron Baker, Surgeon Dr. Kerry Olsen at the Mayo Clinic, and Cheryl Shepherd and her many other caregivers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the American Red Cross.
