Dennis was one of the founders of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity while a student at the University of Alabama. When the Civil War came, Dennis enlisted in the 8th Texas Cavalry, or "Terry's Texas Rangers" & rode with this elite Confederate cavalry regiment until his capture at Stone's River, Tennessee.
