US Senator. A member of the Democratic Party, he served the State of Kentucky in the United States Senate from 1973 until 1985. His father was a Methodist preacher, Walter served as a tank gunner in Europe with the United States Army during World War II. Following his return home, he enrolled at the University of Kentucky, from where he received a degree in Radio Arts. After graduation, he acquired experience in Bowling Green, which led to his co-propriortership with an Elizabethtown station. He became interested in politics and was elected to the Kentucky State Senate in 1965. He succeeded the incumbent Senator John Sherman Cooper and during his tenure in the United States Senate, he served on the Appropriations and Agricultural Committees. He supported President Carter's agenda for the Panama Canal Treaty in 1978. Huddleston also displayed bipartisan tendencies, when he supported President Reagan's amendment for voluntary school prayer. Additionally, he was an opponent of abortion rights. He lost his Senatorial seat to Mitch McConnell in 1984.
