NEWMARKET - Longtime Newmarket resident Tom Johnson took his own life on Friday, September 30, 2016.
Tom was an ace mechanic. Figuring out what piece of a machine wasn't doing its job and correcting it was something he enjoyed. Then about ten years ago, Tom decided he didn't want just to fix things, he wanted to make things. In Newmarket, the oak doors at the Stone Church and the Riverworks and the bar at KJ's are examples of his handicraft. Tom went to the Wooden Boat School, and he made boats. Tom went to The Windsor Institute, and he made Windsor chairs. Tom went to classes at Letterpress Things, and became a letterpress printer and woodcutter.
Small children were fascinated by his handlebar mustache.
Tom loved and was loved by his wife of twenty years, Barbara Briggs of Newmarket. Also special in his life were his children, Josh Johnson of Washington, D.C., and Dawn Hallam of Butler, Pa.; and Dawn's son, Tom's grandson, Finnegan. Tom's sister Marjorie McCabe of Chepachet, R.I., also survives him.
Tom's sister Joyce McLemore died in 2001.
Bad habits and bad health slowed Tom down in recent years, but he will be remembered in Newmarket for his perception, his sense of humor, and his defense of the little guy.
SERVICES: A Time to Remember Tom's Life will be held on Saturday, October 15, at 11:00 a.m. at Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter Street, Newmarket.
