Jimmie was the daughter of James Charlton Fant. James and his family left Louisiana and appeared in Coalinga, California, a prosperous town in Southwest Fresno County, before 1915 when he is listed in the Fresno County Directory as a laborer resident at 568 Sunset street. She married James Allen Cowan, who graduated from Coalinga High School in 1915, and gave birth to a daughter Shirley Elizabeth Cowan on July 11, 1917. Shirley died on the morning of December 2, 1917, from pneumonia. Jimmie died just six months later from tuberculosis. She and James share a marker with their daughter Shirley.
