Youngest of the six children born to Amos Newton Locke & Roxana McMaster.

Raised in St Charles, Amos ventured west to Coffey County, Kansas where his older brother & sister were living. (He’s listed on the 1880 census in the household of his sister Mary & her husband William Langston).

It was there in Kansas where he met his future wife Martha “Mattie” Jackson. Born in Tennessee in May of 1860, Mattie was one of ten children born to Andrew Jackson (1821-1903, #116745588) & Nancy C Donathan (1826-1902, #116745657) who were married in Carter Co., TN on November 24th, 1850.

A. E. Locke & Mattie Jackson were wed in Coffey Co., KS in March of 1883 (both the 12th & the 17th appear in records). The couple returned to Illinois & settled in St Charles where they had one son: Clinton Wayne Locke (see link).

Amos ran his own business & was a successful painter & wallpaper hanger, decorating many of the city’s finer homes. The couple lived in a home on the SE corner State & 1st Avenue (renamed Riverside Drive) where the St Charles Fire Department is now located.

Wife Mattie’s fate is not known to me.

In 1886 Amos purchased land on 3rd Avenue (lots 1 & 2 in Block 27) from William Munn. He sold it off in 1893 to Leigh Marchialette, son of Henry Marchialette & Matilda Crab, who had married Laura Jackson in Rock Co., WI on June 20th, 1892 (marriage record lists her as “Sallie”).

**there is conflicting info in regards to Laura Marchialette-
One source references her as being the daughter of our Amos & an unknown first wife who died in childbirth. Another just refers to her as his daughter. Neither seems likely as Amos would’ve only been 16 in 1868 when Laura was born. The 1900 St Charles census for Laura gives her birth as June 1868 though her death record lists her as born 17 Jan 1873 Waverly, Missouri (sic, actually Waverly, Coffey Co., KS) with her father’s surname as Jackson & in census records her parent’s POB mostly correspond with those of Andrew Jackson & his wife Nancy née Donathan. Her grave marker shows 1871 for YOB.

It seems likely she was Mattie Jackson’s younger sister Annie L Jackson.
