Alessandro d'Este was the son of Alfonso I d'Este duke of Ferrara and his second wife Lucrezia Borgia , daughter of Pope Alexander VI and sister of Cesare Borgia .

The child was named Alessandro in honor of his maternal grandfather. Following the birth, Lucrezia fell sick with puerperal fever but recovered. Instead, one month after birth, the child became seriously ill.

Alfonso sent his best doctor, Francesco Castello , to visit his son but he could not do anything and the child died in October 1505. He was buried at the convent of Corpus Domini .

On April 1, 1514, Lucrezia gave birth to another son named Alessandro, who also died shortly after birth.
