"The family were members of Upper Zion Baptist Church and John C. Gravatt was a deacon. Several of the children were life members and John Cherbury Gravatt and Amanda Broaddus Gravatt were buried in the cemetery of this church. On Sunday, June 18, 1939 the descendants of John C. and Amanda Broaddus Gravatt held their annual reunion in the old church, and dedicated to the memory of their grandparents a handsome stone at their graves in the peaceful cemetery.

In 1942 America faced a world crisis, and the heart of Caroline County was taken over by the War Department of our country and named the A. P. Hill Military Reservation. Upper Zion Baptist Church, organized in 1774, and its beautiful lawn, were in this area. Today the church has been wrecked by cannon balls, all of the shrubbery destroyed, and the bodies buried in the church cemetery have been removed to a new cemetery near Bowling Green, called Greenlawn. The Gravatt Memorial stone was removed and stands in the new cemetery." [Source: The Gravatt Family of the Rappahannock Valley in Virginia; by Sallie Gwathmey Gravatt Fox; 1946]
