Grief's mother passed away shortly after he was born which is probably why his father named him "Grief".

Grief was a Captain in the Charlotte County Militia and saw active service in the War of 1812. While at Camp Mims on 19 September 1814 he was attached to the 2nd Brigade with the 4th Regiment and then on 12 November 1814 he was at Camp Ellicutts Mills
