William enlisted on 10 August 1861 at Dobson, N.C. into Co. B, 2nd N.C. Infantry Regiment.
He was 27 years old.
He was made Sergeant that day.
He was taken prisoner by the enemy at Roanoke Island on 8 Feb 1862 and received parole on 21 Feb 1862.
He made 2nd Lt. on 17 Dec 1862.
William suffered a wound a Gettysburg Pa. on 1 July 1863 and died that night.
His body was removed from Gettysburg in 1871 to the Confederate Cemetery at Oakwood, Raleigh, N.C.
He is buried in Grave # 512.
