Death of Joseph F. Ainsworth, the School-Book Publisher
Joseph F. Ainsworth, a well-known Boston educational book publisher, died on Saturday, October 20, at his home in Dedham, Mass., after an illness of several months…He came to Boston in 1840, and was engaged for a time with Crosby & Nichols publishers. He entered the firm later, it becoming Crosby & Ainsworth. Mr. A.S. Barnes came in later, and the house was known as Woolworth, Ainsworth & Co., and the main branch of the business was moved to New York. Mr. Ainsworth had been interested in public affairs, and at one time was a member of the Boston School Board.
He retired from business in March, 1888, after nearly half a century of active work. His face was known to the book trade in nearly every city of the United States and Canada, and his publications were in use even in Cuba, the Sandwich Islands and Japan. It was estimated that in 1880 his imprint, as publisher, had appeared upon no less than 200,000,000 books. He was the originator of the Payson, Dunton & Scribner series of writing books, and also the publisher of Hanson’s Latin Series, Crosby’s Greek Series, Bartholomew’s Drawing Series, blanks for written spelling and a score of similar publications. Mr. Ainsworth leaves a widow and five children. – (Boston Daily Globe)
