Mr. Townsend was born Jan. 30, 1922, in Wabbaseka to Jesse Eugene Townsend Sr. and Helen Edith Ballard Townsend. Following high school graduation, he entered the Air Force and was a World War II fighter pilot serving overseas in Burma. He retired after 20 years and moved to Stuttgart to farm and raise his family. He was a member of Grand Avenue United Methodist Church.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Scroggins Townsend; their son, Douglas Scott Townsend; and a sister, Edith Townsend Lay.
Survivors are his niece, Lynn and husband Bill of Conway, and nephew, Jim Lay of Rogers, and their families.
A graveside service, officiated by the Rev. Glenn Larsen, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lone Tree Cemetery by Turpin Funeral Home.
