Maud resident William "Bill" Bassett passed away on Tuesday, May 15, 2007 in Norman, Okla., at the age of 81.
He was born Oct. 5, 1925 in Cromwell, Okla., to Harold Elmer and Hazel (Bridgeman) Bassett.

On Oct. 30, 1942, he married Tawana Lee (Bussey) Bassett in Maud.

Bill retired 20 years ago from Buck Exploration where he was in the oilfield.

He served during World War II in the U.S. Navy receiving the Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with five stars.

His parents, one sister, and one grandchild, Clinton Bassett, precede him in death.

He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Robert W. and Carolyn Bassett of Maud; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary L. and Walter Byrd of Poetry, Texas, and Linda and Donnie Johnson of Vici, Okla.; one brother, Richard Bassett of Oklahoma City; eight grandchildren, Alan Bassett, Mark Estes, David Estes, Kerta Thrower, Michael Emmerick, Trena Hopson, Larrianne Bishop, and Clynt Johnson; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Cummings Cemetery in Maud with the Rev. Carl Whitfield officiating and the U.S. Navy presenting military honors.
