He founded Forbes magazine in 1917 and remained Editor-in-Chief until his death in New York City in 1954, though assisted in his later years by Bruce Charles Forbes (1916-1964) and Malcolm Stevenson Forbes (1917-1990), his two oldest sons.
He was the founder of the Investors League in 1942, and the author of numerous financial books.
He was the husband Adelaide Mary Stevenson Forbes (1896 - 1973. They were married on April 20, 1915 and they had five sons: Bruce C., Malcolm S., Gordon B., Wallace F., and Duncan, who was killed in an automobile accident at age 16.
He was originally buried with his wife in the Mount Carmel Cemetery in Tenafly, New Jersey, but he was disinterred and reinterred in his native Scotland.
