Max graduated from Danville High School in 1945, Canterbury College in 1950 and obtained his master's degree from Butler University. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947. Max had a distinguished 38 year career in education as a teacher, coach, principal and assistant superintendent; 30 years in Danville Community School system.
He was active in the North Central High School and Colleges, National Teacher's Association, Danville Rotary Club, and the Plainfield Eagles Lodge #3207. Max was a member of the Danville Christian Church. He was honored at the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame by a former player for his mentorship. Max was one of two inaugural recipients of the Danville High School Alumni Hall of Fame award in 2004.
Max is survived by his wife of 56 years, Janet Johnson Gibbs; son, Steven Gibbs of Danville; daughter, Jacqueline S. Gibbs of Avon; grandchildren, T.J. Rhoades, Dustin Rhodes, Casey Rhoades, and Kendra Castle; three brothers, Frances Gibbs, Frank Jr. Gibbs, and Jack Gibbs, and two sisters, Helen Ellis and Dorothy Gibbs. He was preceded in death by his son, Thomas A. Gibbs and three brothers, Howard, Robert, and Kenneth Gibbs.
Services were entrusted to Baker Funeral Home of Danville, Indiana.
