Beth Josephine Allen was born on May 24, 1915 in Oral, South Dakota to Daniel Ahern and Alice Judd Ahern. The family relocated to Mitchell, South Dakota when Alice traded the family farm for a small house near Dakota Wesleyan College. Beth and her four siblings all graduated from Dakota Wesleyan.
Beth taught high school English for two years in Castlewood, South Dakota, then moved to Sioux Falls, where she was the youngest of 26 English teachers in a school of 2000 students. At the same time her future husband, a high school math teacher in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, was drafted into the Army and sent to Sioux Falls, South Dakota for training. Al Allen and Beth Ahern met through mutual friends, courted briefly, and were married in Spokane, Washington on June 9, 1943. Al left a few months later for training in Ireland and England prior to landing at Normandy on June 18, 1944. He spent the following 14 months as an Army Air Corps communications officer supporting the U.S. 3rd Army.
Beth was joined by her older sister Grace and the two of them taught in Sioux Falls until the summer of 1945 when they traveled together to Williamsport to await Al's return from the war. Al returned that fall, and finding teaching jobs scarce, moved with Beth to California to join a General Motors dealership. Four years later Al was recalled to military service for the Korean War.
Over the next 18 years the Allens lived in five states, Germany, and Belgium before settling in San Antonio, Texas in 1968. Beth maintained her love of teaching English as a substitute in many locations and finally as a full time teacher with the Defense Language Institute at Lackland Air Force Base and at Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio. Beth and Al were married for 41 years before his death on April 23, 1984.
Beth continued her active life as a grandmother of two boys, an officer and president of PEO Chapter BX (1991-1993), and as a leader in many programs of Grace Presbyterian Church.
Beth was preceded in death by her husband Claude Leon "Al" Allen, sisters Kathryn Poulson of Watertown, South Dakota and Grace Bressler of San Antonio, and brother Donald Ahern of Grand Junction, Colorado. She is survived by her sister, son, grandsons, other relatives and many friends.
