Death of Dr. Moore.

Dr. Cyrus C. Moore, died Sunday
August 9, 1885.

Dr. Moore was born in or near Moris-
town, N.J., September 14, 1823. Left
there with his parents in early youth,
going to Sussex county, near Decker-
town, where he was educated, complet-
ing an academic course and preparing
for the study of medicine which he began
when about 17 years old, going to the city
of Philadelphia, Pa, where he engaged for
some time in a first-class retail drug and
prescription store, continuing faithfully
his medical studies by attending lectures
in the university, the Jefferson, and other
noted colleges and hospitals of that city,
until he there graduated and did a large
practice until 1859 when he moved to
Kansas, loacted at Auburn, Shawnee
County, where he continued the practice
of medicine until 1870, when he removed
to Carbondale. Was its first Mayor, and
has been identified with its interests up
to the time of his death. The Dr. was a
member of the Masonic order, having
been made a Mason in Philadelphia in
1847. Was mainly instrumental in or-
ganizing Carbondale Lodge, by whom
he was buried, assisted by delegations
from Scranton, Osage City, Lyndon
and Ridgeway Lodges.

He was married in Philadelphia in
1844 to Miss Catherine Bower, a native
of that city, who just four weeks ago
from the day of his death, was laid too
rest, a remarkable instance, from the fact
that not quite two years ago their only
sons grown to manhood, died just six
weeks apart, from which time the health
of the parents has failed rapidly. Three
daughters survive them.

From their youth the Dr. and his wife
were active members of the Presbyterian
and Methodist Episcopal churches.
The funeral was largely attended by
the citizens of Carbondale and vicinity,
showing the respect and esteem the de-
ceased was held in the estimation of all
those who were acquainted with him,
and by the community generally. The
services were held at the family resi-
dence on Monday afternoon, August 10,
1885, and were under the supervision of
Carbondale Lodge No 70 A.F. and A.
M., the members of which were all pres-
ent with but few exceptions. Quite a
number of Masons from other lodges in
the county were present, having positions
in the procession, among whom were O.E.
McElfresh, C.L. Coleman, Eli Berheim-
ner, Phil Ledoux, M. Campbell, William
Hoggatt, Gus Burkland, of Osage City;
J.A. Jones; Peterton; S.L. Billings, Ol
Deaver, J.T. Underwood, J.N. Morris,
A.Eckhart, R.J. Bazel, of Lyndon; John
B.McCoach, Esq., C.W. Mead, Dr. J.M.
C.Giddings, W.J. Eellish, C.H. Jenkins, of
Scranton; Dr. J.C. Iserman, Clark East-
Man, S.J. Perryman, John Eagon, J.B.
Emory, John Kinney, Isaac Vail, Geor.
W. Metzler, E.C. Hall, Geo. Bradfield, of
Ridgeway Lodge, Ridgeway.
Rev. Riley of the M.E. Church con
ducted the services at the house; and at
the grave the beautiful impressive
burial ceremonies of the Masonic order
were had. Hohn McCoach, Esq., of Scran-
ton Lodge officiating as master, Mr. Jim
S. Callen of Carbondale Lodge was
Marshal. To much praise cannot be
given the Masons for the manner they
conducted the funeral obsequies of their
deceased brother.
