PHOTO NOTE: The final photo, of a Civil War soldier, is NOT our Samuel. In deleting/merging information from a second memorial for Samuel, the photo was added. It is actually for Samuel M Rhodes, Memorial 81837413.

NOTE: The stone to the left of the main monument is Samuel's Civil War stone and has the inscription "Co. E. 4TH MICH.INF." The dual stone (for Samuel and his wife) was purchased after the death of his wife, to honor them both.

Served in the Civil War as a Private in Co E, 4th Michigan V.I., 4th Brigade, 3rd Div, 14th AC. Fought at Murfreesboro. His father, Frederick Sweigart Rhoades, fought in the War of 1812.

Samuel "fell off" a train outside Carlin, Nevada on his way back to Stanton from Healdsburg, California, where he was visiting his sister, Sarah Rhoades Kniss Farrar. The family's version says that he was robbed, beaten and pushed off the train as he was found carrying only some material he had in his jacket which he had purchased to make a dress for one of his daughters.

Samuel was married to Mariah June Allen, daughter of Ambrose Allen and Mary Sherman. He was born in Stark Co, Ohio 16 Oct 1832 and died 04 July 1906.
