David's parents spelled their surname, "Sperbeck". He spelled it "Spurbeck". He was the oldest of 13 children of Benjamin Sperbeck and Juliana Waldorf, David was a sailor for several years before enlisting in the cavalry service of the Regular Army in 1856, where he served five years, and then enlisted in the U. S. Navy, serving 13 months months. He became a farmer and married Marinda Newkirk on July 14, 1873, in Springfield, Otsego County, N. Y. They had six children:

Luzerne, born May, 1874;
Anna, born 1877;
Helen, born 1878;
Orlando, born December 27, 1880; died July, 1965;
William, born May 1883;
Edward, born May 1885.
