RUFUS K. BELFORD

Rufus K. Belford, 88, of Prosperity R. D. 2, near Deer Lick, but who spent most of hs life in the immediate Waynesburg vicinity and at Garards Fort died at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 19, 1972, in Greene County Memorial Hospital.

His death followed an extended illness and a gradual decline in health the past few years. He had been hospitalized for more than a year after suffering a massive stroke.

Mr. Belford was born in Wetzel County, W. Va., on March 7, 1884, but most of his adult life was spent in Greene County.

He was a member of John Corbly Baptist Church, Garards Fort.

For many years he had been a farmer and stock raiser. In addition to his own farms, he had worked during the latter years of his life as a farm manager for the late John Carter, of Ninevah, and the late Edward G. Huffman.

He and his wife had made their home at the Huffman farm near Deer Lick for the last several years.

Having worked since boyhood on farms in this area and in other occupations he was an expert in the husbandry of crops and animals and was respected for his keen judgement in the handling of animals, tillage and other aspects of farming.

He was among the last of the older farmers who had to rely on their own resourcefulness and intuitive knowledge, coupled with energetic endeavor to attain the skills and insight for which he was respected by other farmers and farm owners.

Along with farming he had also worked in the foundry at the former Elms Brothers Machine Shop in Waynesburg and on the former Waynesburg & Washington Railroad.

Mr. Belford was a son of Nathaniel and Sarah Dulaney Belford. He wsa twice married. His first wife, was the former Malissa Wilson, who died in 1925. His second wife, the former Sarah Reed, survives.

He is also survived by two sons: Arthur, of Steubenville, Ohio, and David, of Waynesburg; one daughter, Mrs. Albert (Helen) Cole, of Washington; one brother, Alfred, of Waynesburg, who is now the last of a family of 11.

A son, Arol, and a daughter, Mildred, are deceased. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren and by several great and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday with burial in Garards Fort Cemetery.
