Marion Augusta Weltner Cannon was born in Atlanta, Georgia, the fourth child of Philip and Sally Hull Weltner. She was a lifelong animal lover and was inducted into the Humane Society at birth; she wrote in her diary as a young child that she wanted to live on farm with lots of dogs and children.
She was an alumna of North Avenue Presbyterian School, North Fulton High School, and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1944 just one month before her 20th birthday. While in college she was a member of 10 honor societies. The most important to her was Phi Beta Kappa because her father had also earned this honor from the University of Georgia.
After college, she was the postmistress of Oglethorpe College, which she enjoyed immensely.
She was married to Joseph Granbery Cannon in June of 1948 and immediately set upon her goal of living on a farm with lots of children and dogs, although it wasn’t a farm but was a large property in Buckhead where she and Joe raised 6 children, dogs, rabbits, cats, and an albino possum. She made sure she nourished her mind and spirit as well as her brood of animals and children. She hung her Phi Beta Kappa key on the window behind her kitchen sink to remind herself that she that “she used to be smart”, a story told by her nephew .

She had a long and abiding relationship with her religion. She raised her children to do unto others as they would have them do unto them. She was much loved by her large family and everyone she met. She used to wake her children up in the middle of the night to go outside and sit on the hood of the car in pajamas and show us the constellations and tell us stories of the Greek gods who were represented by the stars. She never really lost her enthusiasm for living and learning and was still doing cartwheels well into her 50s.
Marion and Joe moved to Watkinsville upon his retirement.
Left to mourn her loss are her six children and their spouses: Sally Cobb Cannon, of Atlanta; Elizabeth Gordon Cannon and her husband Dr.Henry Parr of Bloomington, Ilinois; , Joseph Granbery Cannon, Jr, of Watkinsville, Georgia; Dr. Robert Minnick Cannon II and his wife Joy Williams Cannon of Watkinsville, Georgia; Callender Weltner Cannon Patterson and her husband James Patterson of Charlotte, North Carolina; and Philip Thomas Cannon of Watkinsville, Georgia; 15 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Eagerly awaiting her arrival in Heaven are her parents, Dr. Philip Weltner and Sally Cobb Hull Weltner; her siblings: Callender Weltner Dorsey and her husband Jasper Dorsey; Philip Weltner, Jr.; May Pope Weltner Norwood and her husband William Usher Norwood; and Charles Longstreet Weltner: her nephew John Tucker Dorsey, her grandson William Turner Crumbley, her daughter in law Julie Lowrey Cannon, her husband Joseph Granbery Cannon, a host of animals of all kinds and many friends who dearly loved her and she them.
