Son of journalist and U.S. Representative Lorenzo Brentano, Theodore Brentano was a city attorney and judge for 31 years. He was appointed the first American Ambassador to Hungary under Presidents Harding and Coolidge from 1922 to 1927, and was treasurer and president of the Illinois Staats-Zeitung, one of the most widely circulated German language newspapers in the United States.
