Bennie Lindbergh Angell, 90, of Boones Mill departed from earthly home to his heavenly home Thursday, December 21, 2017. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Bennie was also known as the "Candy Man", PaPa Bennie and Pops. Bennie never met a stranger and he was a compassionate, caring and kind man, always giving to others. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 42 years, Norma Jean Wray Angell; one grandson, Josiah David Rickman; one granddaughter, Jennifer Lorraine Angell; his mother and father, Joseph Marshall and Annie Crook Angell; brothers and wives, Elmo and Frances Angell, Herman and Norene Angell; half-sisters, Etta and Glen LaPrad, Katherine Sink, Josie and Patch Mills; sister-in-law, Corinne Angell; brothers-in-law, Bud Ferguson and Henry Seay; also Jeans's family of 11 brothers and sisters and in-laws including one surviving brother-in-law, Galen Flora. Left to cherish his memory are a son and daughter-in-law, Les and Debbie Angell; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Randy Rickman; Joy and Ben Wood; Sherry Angell; six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, seven great- grandchildren, six step-great-grandchildren; brother, Luther (Luke) Angell; sister, JoAnna (Tip) Seay. Having been blessed to be a part of two large families, he is survived by many wonderful nieces, nephews and cousins, friends, church family and children of the church he loved dearly including a special little girl, Willow White; also special friends, Dal and Evelyn Abshire (both deceased). Joe and Doris Rhea (both deceased), Dr. Milton Miller (deceased) and Elizabeth, Mrs. Margaret Shepherd, Lee Flora, Clark and Jerene Arrington, Milton Arrington (deceased) and Mary B., J.L. Red Whitlow and Virginia, Pastor Patrick Collins and Marjorie. The family is very thankful for the wonderful caregiver he had, Lenora Witcher and the great care she provided. Bennie knew nothing but hard work all his life, working as a Nursing Assistant at Salem VA Medical Center for 37 1/2 years, and making many friends there. He also dug graves by pick and shovel for 20 1/2 years. He butchered hogs, gardened, cut wood and many other things. He proudly served his country, in the United States Army serving in Japan and Korea November 1950-October 1952. While serving, Bennie talked with God and said he didn't want to have to shoot anyone and during his time he said he never saw a dead or wounded soldier and was thankful for that. He promised God (in the middle of the Atlantic) if he got home he would serve him to the best of his ability, all he had was his hands to use and ask God to give him a job he could do with those hands and God did. He, his wife and his Dad along with James Wood (former Pastor) are the reasons Boones Mill Baptist Church is where it is today. They cleared the land and Dad sacrificed in many ways for this church to be there today. He has served the church in many ways; as a Deacon, Trustee, Choir Member, Brotherhood cook, and Counting Committee which he started at the old church. When he was 18 years old, he started as a member in the Mens Bible Class and they gave out fruit to widow and widowers in the church and community for many years. He and Mom also gave out a treat of oranges, tangerines, and candy to all church members that came on Christmas Sunday for many years. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 5, 2018 at Boones Mill Baptist Church with the Rev. Patrick Collins and the Rev. Jim Steele officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 4th, 2018 at Boones Mill Baptist Church. Memorials can be made to Boones Mill Baptist Church Building Fund or St. Jude's Children Research Hospital or the Multiple Myeloma Foundation. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center Rocky Mount.
