OBITUARY: - ROBERTSON: On October 26, 2018 Ethel Robertson, beloved wife of the late Ross Robertson, passed away at Hamiota Birch Lodge Personal Care Home, at the age of 85. She was predeceased by her husband Ross; parents Norman and Dorothy Kirk; brother Russell (Gail) Kirk, sister-in-law Linda Kirk; brother-in-law Nelson (Winifred) Kreager; sisters-in-law Mildred (Jack) Clifford; Mabel (Howard) Paddock; Isabel (Joe) Clifford; and Mona (Harvey) Hyde.

Born on October 5, 1933 to Norman and Dorothy Kirk, Ethel was the oldest of 4 children; Russell, David and Edith. Ethel completed her Grade 11 in Decker, and after completing a six week course at summer school in Winnipeg, received a one year teaching permit. She taught school at Dowsford (near Solsgirth) and boarded with the Jim Dunn family.

In 1953 she married Ross and lived on the farm at NW 4-14-23 in Pitlochry, which Ross had purchased from Roy Shier. Ethel worked for a few years in the C Brown Store and General Store. In 1960 Wesley George was born; 1962 Norman Wayne and 1965 Beverly Darlene. In 1974 she went back to work at the IGA for Don and Doreen Mennie, and later Wayne Mathison. She then became the Seniors Resource Coordinator and also worked at Irwin's Drive-Inn for a few summers.

In 1984 Ross and Ethel moved into Hamiota, while son Wayne and Colleen took over the family farm. Ross and Ethel spent many years dancing, whether it was Old Time Dancing, Round Dancing or Square Dancing. Monday nights they travelled to Solsgirth, Wednesday to Newdale, Thursday in Hamiota, Friday nights to Old Time Dances, and Saturday nights to Square Dance Jamborees. Dancing took them many places and a number of lifelong friendships were formed. They danced in Canada and the United States, with the highlight being a square dance trip to Hawaii.

Ross and Ethel held a number of offices, including President of the Square Dance Federation. Even though summers required work around the farm, there was still time for camping. Oak Lake was typically the campground of choice, and also going to Family Camp at Clear Lake's Camp Wannakumbac. A number of trips to Ontario to visit family near Hamilton and Hanover, including Niagara Falls, are fond memories. The highlight has to be a family trip to California's Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm in 1978. It was the one and only time ice cream was acceptable for breakfast!

In addition to working and dancing, Ethel still found time for volunteering and belonged to a number of clubs including: Rebekah's Lodge, UCW (including president) and the Christian Education Committee, Sunday School Teacher for 16 years, member of the Red Hat Society, and delivering Meals on Wheels. Ethel's talent in the kitchen was also recognized by many. Cooking, baking, canning and pickling; she could do it all. Ethel sold thousands of dollars of her goods at the Farmer's Markets. Granddaughter Laura also asked Grandma to teach them to cook when she was in 4-H.

Something else Ethel never shied away from was dressing silly. She took part in many skits through Rebekah's, or entertaining at someone's shower or anniversary party, and of course many a Halloween. Parkinson's hit Ethel at age 65 and it wasn't long until she had to give up her love of dance. However that didn't keep her at home. She found new activities to become involved with such as euchre, whist and carpet ball, and attended several Seniors Games. She even won some awards along the way!

Suddenly on January 19, 2006, after 52 years of marriage, Ross passed away doing what he loved; square dancing. Despite the sudden loss, Ethel continued on as best she could and continued her busy lifestyle. In 2008 she moved into her condo, while Grandson Steven purchased and moved into her house. She spent a number of years enjoying the condo and new neighbors, and also joined the Lion's Club. In 2014 she moved to Lilac Residence, and in 2015 into Birch Lodge PCH. Ethel still enjoyed playing cards, scrabble, and listening to music, especially someone playing the fiddle.

She was also an avid baseball and curling fan; but time spent with grandchildren was highest on her priority list! Enduring 20 years with Parkinson's limited her mobility, but it never impacted her spirit or love of life. Her memory was sharp as a tack, her wit and tongue even sharper! We will cherish the memories of her 85th birthday celebration held just 3 weeks ago. Although sudden, we are so thankful for her peaceful passing and that she never suffered. And most of all, it brings comfort in knowing mom and dad are together again, dancing the nights away.

Funeral service was held at the Hamiota United Church on Friday, November 2nd, interment at Hamiota Cemetery
