Born in Georgia, he emigrated to Bienville Parish circa 1848. In 1850 James was a hotel keeper, listed in the census in the Western District of Bienville Parish (census enumerated Sept 5, 1850). Tremayne's Table of Post Offices lists him as postmaster of Sparta in 1850. He served as secretary of the Masonic Lodge in Sparta in 1851 and was elected the town's first marshal in 1853.
James M. Denson married Permelia Catherine Owens in Walton County, Georgia, March 7, 1838. They had four children listed in the 1850 census: William Ezra F. Denson (b. ca. 1841); Ora Ann E. Denson (b. 1845); J. A. L. Denson (b. ca. 1847); W. T. O. Denson (b. ca. 1849). Some family trees list two other children, Melvina M. Denson (1838-1843) and Marcus A. Denson (1840-1915). (In my opinion Marcus may be the son of another James M. Denson, listed with wife Louisa Denson and children in the 1850 Coosa County, Alabama census.) After James's death, Permelia married Hiram Evans in 1860 and they had at least one child, Lee Price Evans.
James Denson served as President of the Southern Musical Convention in 1847. Denson family tradition asserts that he composed CHRISTMAS ANTHEM, page 225 in The Sacred Harp.
