Anna was born Anna Árnadóttir on October 30, 1860 in Skagafjarðarsýsia region (Possibly Marbaebi) in north central Iceland. Anna was the second child of Árni Jónsson and Þuriður (Thuridur) Elisabet Jónsdóttir.

Anna left Iceland with her family at age 15 and they travelled to the “New Iceland” community in Manitoba in 1876 (near Gimli). She may then have migrated with some of the family members that went to the newly formed Icelandic community at Pembina & Mountain, North Dakota in 1880 along with Gisli Konrað Eiriksson, her brother Johann (possibly the rest of the family as well).

Anna connected with Halldor Sigfusson Baker in North Dakota where their son Johann (Joseph) Magnus Baker was born on Sept. 7, 1881 at Pembina. On Jan. 11, 1884 their first daughter, Sigridur Lilja (Sarah Lillian) Baker was born. About that time Anna had moved to Winnipeg where her second daughter, Elisabet Baker was born on Nov. 25, 1885. It is believed that she and Halldor parted company about that time with Halldor back in Pembina, North Dakota in 1890/91.

Anna married Thorgeir Simonarson in Winnipeg in 1893 and we know that Johann was with the family until about 1896 (age 14) because there is a photograph with him and sister “Bessie” taken by a professional photographer in Portage La Prairie. In 1896 when the family moved to “Big Point”, Johann may have gone to the Yukon and then returned to Washington to live with his father Halldor. Johann died in 1953 in Washington. Anna returned to Manitoba with the two girls and was still using the name Simonarson in 1901 when the family lived in Westbourne, Manitoba. Anna later changed her name back to Baker and moved to Langruth, Manitoba where she operated a very successful boarding house until her death in 1927. She is resting at Big Point Cemetery near Langruth.
