Mr. Robert W. O'Brien, 88, a lifelong resident of Rockland died Sunday, October 24, 2004 in the Brockton Hospital after a short illness. He was born in Rockland on July 11, 1916, the son of the late Daniel W. and Marion E. (McNamara) O'Brien. He was raised and educated in Rockland and was a graduate of Rockland High School and a graduate of the Brockton Business School. Mr. O'Brien served in the Navy during WWII, and was a member of the Rockland Post of the American Legion. He began his career as a Substitute Mail Carrier at the Rockland Post Office in 1937, then becoming a full time Mail Carrier in 1939. After his war service he became an inside Mail Clerk in 1948 and was appointed Superintendent of the Mail in Rockland in 1951. He was named Assistant Postmaster in 1953 and retired from that position in 1971. Mr. O'Brien was an active member of Holy Family Parish and was a former Eucharist Minister at Holy Family. He was a member of the AARP and a member of the National Association of retired Federal Employees.

Husband of the late Alice I. (Murrill) O'Brien, he is survived by 4 sons, Robert J. O'Brien of Hanson, John F. O'Brien of Downingtown PA, Peter O'Brien of Whitman and Michael J. O'Brien of Rockland and 1 daughter, Joanne E. Sartori of Andover. Mr. O'Brien is also survived by his companion, Pauline Petipas, 16 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren
