Bob was born Dec. 6, 1933, in Urbana, the son of Paul H. and Thelma B. (Johnson) McCartney. He married Ruth M. Bennett on Nov. 28, 1952, and she survives.
He is also survived by his sons, Robert L. McCartney (Debbie) of Urbana and Scott A. McCartney (Celia) of Urbana and daughters, Sherri D. Johnson-Voges (Tim) of Urbana and Linda L. Murphy (Mike) of Urbana. Bob is also survived by 10 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a sister, Joanne Mathis.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Clifford Paul, Charles and Donald and sisters, Betty Myers and Patricia Ann McCartney. Bob was also preceded in death by his granddaughter, Kristin McCartney, and son-in-law, Scott D. Johnson.
Bob was a native of Urbana and graduated from Urbana High School. He started his career as an Urbana Park District police officer. He then went to the Urbana Police Department, where he graduated from the FBI Training School and rose to head investigator in his 12-year career. He was also co-owner of Macks Auto Recycling and a member of C-U Christian Church.
